Human Promotion
As we engage in missionary work, we meet the poor Christ through many people in need who wish to lead more humane and dignified lives. We focus on their basic problems and needs, hoping that by addressing these, they will be ready to receive the message of the gospel and its call to mission.
We help people and families facing urgent needs, such as access to medical visits, medicines, food, clothing, and job opportunities. We support them in taking charge of their own growth, both as individuals and in their faith. We listen to them, talk with them, and focus on their progress. We empower local people and use local resources while involving others who want to join in our efforts for solidarity.
Our human promotion activities include these specific programs or actions:
ANGELS’ HOME
- Houses of Accommodation: In Mindoro and Manila, a structure called “Angels’ Home,” was built to accommodate children and young girls who were either orphaned or belonging to poor families. These children are given the chance to study as well as human and Christian formation. To instill the value of Christian service, the older ones are also given the chance to help in our apostolate during and after they have completed their studies. Before the military seized power in Myanmar in 2021, the same structure existed in Myanmar – the Via Pacis House. Unfortunately, this has been wrecked by the war, but some children remained in the care of the Sisters, especially those who have lost their homes and family to the war.
- Sponsorship: We help children through sponsorships. This program involves regular meetings and personal contact with both the children and their families. In 1994, our Congregation started the Adozioni a Distanza program to support the mission of educating young people. With help from donors in other countries, we provide financial assistance for the studies of poor children.
- Remedial Classes: Helping those in need means empowering them to reach their full potential and gain skills for the common good. Our mission goes beyond giving them a chance to study; we also want to support them in making the most of that chance. To address the challenges some children face in their studies, we have set up remedial classes in various neighborhoods.
- Feeding Programs: To address the problem of malnutrition among children in Mindoro, we started feeding programs in the barrios of Occidental Mindoro. These programs provide malnourished children with one healthy meal each day. We aim to meet their needs and promote co-responsibility among the mothers of the children in the program. The mothers help by cooking, assisting the children, and keeping the feeding center clean and organized.
- Livelihood Programs: In collaboration with other organizations, our communities provide seminars empowering individuals to be self-sufficient financially as well as small capital to start a venture,
- Medical Assistance: We provide medical assistance to individuals with limited financial resources. With the support of our benefactors, we cover the costs of medications, miscellaneous expenses, and supplements. Our transient house in Manila accommodates those from the provinces who require treatment in the city.
- Emergency Assistance: In times of calamities, the compound of our community also serves as a place of refuge for families and helps in whatever way possible.
Refugee Assistance: In Myanmar, currently afflicted by war, our Sisters provide necessary assistance to the refugees, materially, morally, and spiritually, in collaboration with the diocese and other non-government organizations. They hand out food and other basic necessities, engage in programs aimed at enhancing the refugees’ mental well-being, listen to them, encourage them, and pray with them.
